Artist Statement / Getting Caught
Some of the best and most beautiful portraits occur when someone has no idea a camera is close by. I often use strangers on the street as my subject matter in an attempt to capture a person in his or her true likeness. No fake smiles, no fronts, no pretending, just being. Sometimes I get caught. My secret is revealed and I am detected. My shutter clicks at the same moment my camera is seen. A whole new beauty is composed. I have frozen the likeness of surprise and discovery. The relationship this stranger and I share is shifted. As butterflies sing in my stomach, thoughts swirl in my head. Have I triggered a new behavior? What happens to a stranger to stranger relationship when you get caught looking at each other? These compositions are unexpected, emotional, and show a side of a stranger some people never get to see.
